A friend who lives at Water Song in Graham,
NC, brought me an image that called very strongly to me. She
had taken a pic of Buckley, one of the rescue deer at their
rehabilitation field. The day after I finished this painting,
Buckley, the deer who inspired the painting, jumped out of his
pen with the other deer and now goes back and forth from the
wild, and revisits his group at Water Song. The picture showed
his radiant self, and his personality was described to me as
"Christ like". This was evident in his eyes! I endeavored
to express in my painting, the radiant innocence of this deer's
eyes.
The message in my painting is about the way deer are sharing
their world of nature with us. We come to live in their homes,
and they make way, though perhaps nibble (ok, sometimes, dessimate)
our gardens. I wish we could show them greater respect; road
kill is a very sad occurance, and we see plenty of deer who
meet their end on the roads and we wisk by their sad carcasses.
This is not a happy theme, but at least the heartfelt prayer
to these spirits that they make it to their appropriate realms,
and they know we love their species. They will perhaps be giving
even more in the future.
